We used to use Google Adsense however problems running a gaming site have make them a big target for adblockers. Today Google has seen declining revenue from Adsense.
Adsense serves automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements, that are targeted to site content and audience. These advertisements are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google. They can generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. The AdSense name was originally used by Applied Semantics, a competitive offering to AdSense. The name was adopted by Google after Google acquired Applied Semantics in April 2003.
Google still markets Adwords which are sold to commercial interests. These appear at the top of selected search results. Adsense was the web site equivalent of search.
Some of the abuses we have discovered over time include web scraping which tried to trick Google etc using known high value keywords. With regard to copyright, while outright duplication of original expression will in many cases be illegal, in the United States the courts ruled in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service that duplication of facts is allowable. This is of concern as there a lot of abuses.
Today we use Amazon who offers a more secure ad service that contextual with the site, Given that traffic on the site is PC gaming oriented, this seems like the best choice. Amazon works well in blogs, which is where Adsense was slightly Awkward.
Video ads are not very well accepted by anyone so we have found Google’s offerings to be behind the curve relative to our needs, We see ads on some sites that seem to rely on cookies etc which may not be as desirable as contextual ads.
An example of contextual ads is a video card review. The ads we want to display should be for video cards in the same price band. We ad links to Amazon for specifics with roundup pages etc. This is something Adsense cannot do as Google is not a large retailer.
Video ads are far from the type of content we want on the site. For that reason we have abandoned Adsense in favor of more specialized solutions.
Advertising is a very sophisticated topic, one that requires the most careful consideration.
