The Toshiba DT01ACA300 is a standard 3TB SATA III hard disk. Toshiba returned to the hard disk business after buying Hitachi’s hard disk unit in a deal with WDC. With the return of Toshiba, there are now three vendors manufacturing 3½” hard disks. Concerns that Toshiba was not committed should be allayed as the DT01ACA300l is still manufactured in November 2016 which is more than 3 years from its introduction. More recently Toshiba has also offered larger capacity 4TB and now 5TB hard disks.

We have only 1 of this disk used for general data purposes. Backblaze has 45 of them who reported a 5.1% annual failure rate which is lower than what Seagate and WDC disks have been revealing.
We noted immediately that the DT01ACA300 is faster than Seagate ST3000DM001 for reading data. This is unusual for consumer disks and is usually seen more with corporate hard disks.
The Toshiba DT01ACA300 has triple the workload of the ST3000DM001 which makes it attractive for NAS or RAID use. We have seen some reports of failures, but they are related more to overheating than poor quality. Many consumer NAS boxes have few fans. Servers have much better cooling which does help with reliability.
No question that consumers would like this hard disk, its very well built and seems to be rugged which is what everyone wants. After more than 3 years on the market, this hard disk is excellent value for any purpose.
