Ubuntu 17.10, aka Artful Aardvark, has been bricking some models of Lenovo and other machines. The problem is some Intel code that messes with the BIOS using some SPI driver.
No operating system at any time should be messing with the firmware. Some said their machines were left unbootable and needed to have the motherboard replaced.
Ubuntu has pulled 17.10 and plans to remove the SPI before checking for other problems before it is released again.
